Our Autumn Fine Art & Antiques Auction produced top results across all departments, signalling dynamic growth and a strong appetite for fine works.
A 19th century Coalbrook dale style garden bench caught the attention of multiple builders, selling for £901*, while the ever-popular Orkney chairs achieved £1,803* and £1,120*.

Striking settees proved to be the top-sellers in our 20th century design department. A Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra “Alcove” settee sold for £772, and two extravagant Louis XVI style three seater settees sold for £644* and £515*.

An array of decorative delights performed well in our European Ceramics, Glass & Decorative Arts departments. A charming Glasgow Coat of Arms fashioned from burr and root wood, adorned with the city’s symbols sparked great local interest, selling for £837*. Further afield, Georges Duvernet’s Art Deco sculpture ‘Oblivion’ achieved £1,094*, while a Goldscheider figure by Stefan Dixon sold for £1,094*. The top-selling lot was a fancifully modelled Meissen swan, which flew to £1,094*.

Chinese porcelain continues to command strong prices in our Asian & Ethnic Arts department. A pair of Doucai vases achieved £1,159*, while a similar box and cover sold for £1,416*. Famille Rose vases also sold well at £1,416* and a beautifully painted plaque and carved stand sold for £1,228*. The market for Satsuma shows signs of upward growth, with a fine vessel made by Kinkozan achieving £3,606*.

Niche boardgames from the renowned Jaques & Son achieved strong prices in our Collectables department. Two numerical puzzles soared to £1,094*, while The Game of Hexagonia achieved £1,416*. A curious taxidermy terrier named Fruach stole the show, selling for nearly 10 times the bottom estimate, at £1,932*.

A single-owner collection of Imperial Pickelhaubes attracted frenzied bidding in our Militaria department. With multiple phone bids and international interest, the collection sold for a total of £7,187*. A fine Japanese Katana took the top lot in the department with a price of £1,996*.

Fine works from established makers both contemporary and historic achieved top prices in our Silver department. A silver gilt inkstand by Richard Sibley achieved £1,030*, while a Presentation trophy cup by Hamilton & Inches sold achieved £708*. Pieces by Mappin & Webb performed well, with a salver selling for £772 and an impressive canteen for £7,728.

Gold prices remain at a strong level as seen in our Coins department. Sovereigns regularly achieved £515*, 10g gold bars at £618*, and 50g bars at £3,091*.

Stunning diamonds populated our Jewellery department and were some of the most sought-after pieces. The first lot of the section set the tone: an old cut flower brooch sold for £2,833*. A princess cut bracelet achieved £3,155*, while substantial five stone and three stone rings sold for £5,152* and £8,372* respectively. The jewel within the department was the diamond set heart locket, which soared to £9,660 after minutes of tense bidding.

Modern sculptures achieved top prices within our Paintings department. Martin Rayner’s Seahorse raced past it’s estimate, selling for £3,606*, while Robert Adams’ Circular Form 2 achieved £2,576*.

Land and cityscapes from recognisable places performed well. Jack Vettriano’s example sold for £2,189*, while John Stanton Ward’s depiction of Piazza Navona sold for £1,932*, while Alfred Fontville De Dreanski’s dreamlike view of Eileen Donan Castle sold for £1,674*. John Frederick Herring Senior’s depictions of gallant horses were sought after, selling for £2,833* and £4,121*. Mans best friend, a Terrier in a Winter landscape, jumped far beyond the high estimate, achieving £2,704*.

The top lot within the department was The Knight and the Man-at-arms by Albrecht Durer. This print carried a serpent watermark and attracted strong international bidding, finally selling for £9,660*.
