VIEWS OF INDIA, A PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM BY JOHNSTON & HOFFMAN, CALCUTTA
Circa late-C19th, quarter-bound in tan leather, containing a quantity of topographical and architectural views, largely Calcutta (Kolkata) and Darjeeling, hand-annotated in ink; also portraits of Indian nobility; festival, agricultural and tiger-hunting scenes, etc.
Condition of the album is poor. It looks to have been stored long-term in a damp environment and as such, the binding has deteriorated badly. Spine is tattered and hanging loose; covers very dirty, marked and with tears generally to edges. Thick card pages are warped. Discolouration, foxing and mildewy spots to all pages. Front end page with a substantial tear.
Approximately 88 views in total.
Individual photograph dimensions vary but on average, around 26cm x 21cm.
Photographs generally in reasonable condition, though some discolouration and warping, as with pages.
