GEORGE PARSONAGE MBE (SCOTTISH b.1944)
SINGLE SCULLER AT FRONT STOPS
Welded metal, signed, circa 2014, 96 x 81 x 25cm
George Parsonage is one of Glasgow’s last rivermen and he has spent four decades rescuing people from the river Clyde. Leader of Glasgow’s Humane Society, and named Pride of Scotland, Parsonage took over from his father, Ben Parsonage, and devoted his life to his life saving efforts in Scotland’s waterways. Parsonage is also a prolific sculptor, and uses welded metal to create the impression of speed and urgency when racing to the rescue.
Artist's Note: New type one-piece riggers and high bow deck. Pieces of iron and steel welded and melted together to form the figure, the riggers and the rowlocks. The bow ball at the front of the scull is a ball bearing. Fingers are mostly old nails. The rods for the oars were bought in, the cleaver type blades welded on the curved with hammer on anvil. The base was cut from an old boat seat.
