Conroy is a Scottish figurative painter renowned for his depictions of the male figure in theatrical and intriguing atmospheres, confronting the long history of European portraiture, deriving inspiration from Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. Born in Helensburgh, he received his formal training at the Glasgow School of Art, and he is a practicing artist in Glasgow today. Internationally recognised, his work is held in significant collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
