AN EARLY-19th CENTURY SCOTTISH OFFICER'S 1828 PATTERN BASKET-HILTED BROADSWORD
By Firmin, London, with wire-wound shagreen grip, the double fullered blade, well "battle-scarred" and measuring approx. 81cm in length, housed in a metal-mounted leather scabbard.

To be sold in aid of St. Andrews University's Kate Kennedy Trust.
The Kate Kennedy Procession, instituted 1926, is an annual pageant celebrating the history of Scotland. More than 150 characters, some of whom ride in coaches or on horseback and all of whom are costumed, are represented. Proceeds from the sale of the sword will be put towards the ongoing enhancement and repair of the Procession costumes by the Trust.

More Information

Sword is in a heavily worn overall condition. Basket is rusted/corroded over much of its surface. There is a considerable amount of play between the basket and blade. Blade itself is very worn, with multiple deep nicks to the striking edge and some light surface rust. Shagreen grip well patinated but undamaged and firmly affixed to the tang. The scabbard is in rough shape, with the leather split at the sewn seam and torn just above the metal mount at the tip. Patent surface worn away over much of the scabbard, with what would appear to be initials scored into the surface roughly halfway down its length. Metal mounts have lost much their gilding and one has been affixed in opposition to the other - i.e. the suspension rings are on opposite sides.
