A RARE BRACE OF EARLY-19TH CENTURY MAIL COACH PISTOLS BY H.W. MORTIMER & SON, LONDON
The 23cm-long brass barrels stamped with London proof marks and engraved "H.W. Mortimer & Son, Gun-Makers to His Majesty 287" on the flat and "For His Majesty's Mail Coaches" around muzzle face (heavily worn), the maker's name additionally engraved to steel lock faces, one pistol having horn-tipped ramrod, the other lacking
Please be aware we cannot guarantee the functionality of mechanical elements. However, the pistol with the intact mechanism currently holds full and half cock well, with trigger releasing fine. Overall condition is rough. Pistol with taped barrel shows many splits to wood, with an extensive loss towards muzzle - and ramrod lost. Other pistol is in more structurally sound shape (barring the missing hammer). Overall deep patination, with chips and knocks generally to all areas. Engraving round muzzle faces is worn heavily and close to illegible. Engraving to top of barrels clearly legible, though somewhat worn through handling. Mechanisms with surface rust in places and heavy tarnish.
