A GOOD GEORGE IV NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
Featuring a depiction of Inverary Castle, Argyll, beneath the verse
My family is ancient and so is my name,
They have aye been conspicuous since Fergus of fame
My structure tho modern is a venerable pile
And I'm still the residence of the Great Argyle
With upper and lower borders reading respectively "Thomas Brackenridge Katheren McColl"; and "Janet Brackenridge soewed (sic) this sampler in the year 1823 Margaret McPherson"; each followed by a succession of two-letter monograms; measuring approx. 55.5cm x 49.5cm overall and housed within a gilt oak frame measuring approx. 63.5cm x 58cm externally, lacking glass
Sampler is in fairly good overall condition. It is generally discoloured/yellowed, with mottled/foxed areas. The fabric is tacked onto stretchers: many of these tacks have rusted, staining the surrounding material, with minor tears. The sampler is placed over a fine cotton backing, which is heavily stained, as can be seen in final image. The backing is torn in two places, though the sampler itself is unharmed. There are no holes/tears to the sampler and the stitching is largely undamaged. One area (to the right of the castle door) is depressed, as if something has rested upon it. The stitching here is somewhat fuzzed. Some apparent glue residue around the perimeter.
Frame lacks glass and sampler is set loose within it. Corner joints are slack. Old tacks to the reverse.
