Alexander McNeish was born at Bo'ness, near Linlithgow, and he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art under John Maxwell between 1952 and 1957. McNeish went on to teach at Wolverhampton College of Art and became head of painting at Exeter College of Art from 1965 to 1980. A linocut by McNeish illustrated a William McGonagall poem in British periodical of visual poetry, Poor Old Tired Horse, and 10 linocuts illustrated Gael Turnbull’s poetry book called A Very Particular Hill, published by Wild Hawthorn Press, which was set up by Ian Hamilton Finlay, the latter included in this lot.
