BOTANICAL INTEREST: A COLLECTION OF GLASS PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES DOCUMENTING SIR GEORGE TAYLOR'S 1939 HIMALAYAN EXPEDITION
In 1939, Scottish botanist Sir George Taylor (15th Feb. 1904 - 13th November 1993) was invited by Major George (Geordie) Sherriff, whose family owned the Bowmore whisky distillery and was himself an enthusiastic plant collector with a particular interest in Himalayan species, to accompany him on an expedition to Sikkim, Nepal and Tibet. The plates here offered record many of the samples collected over the course of the expedition, the original film having been shot and pressed on the Tibetan plain prior to its dispatch to the Natural History Museum.
Taylor went onto become Keeper of the Botany Department of the British Museum and was later appointed Director of Kew Gardens, receiving a knighthood for his services from Queen Elizabeth II in 1962. Six years later, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London.
Provenance: gifted by Taylor directly to the vendor.
