AN ASTER LIVE STEAM GAUGE 1 MODEL SCHOOLS CLASS 4-4-0 "WINCHESTER" LOCOMOTIVE AND TENDER
Model no. 2205, in green and black Southern Railway livery, rolling free upon a length of track mounted on a wooden plinth base; together with an Aster catalogue featuring the model.
In the late 1920s, a new design of four-coupled locomotive was required for the Hastings Line, owing to the route's tight restrictions in tunnels and tight curves. This need was met by the V class three cylinder locomotive with large 6'7" driving wheels, the most powerful 4-4-0 engine in Europe at the time of its introduction. Most engines were named after prominent boys' schools along the Southern Railway, hence "Winchester".
