JOCK "TIGER" SHAW OF RANGERS F.C. - A 9ct GOLD GLASGOW JUNIOR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHARITY CUP WINNER'S MEDAL
Likely by J. McMenamin Ltd., Birmingham, 1931, weighing 16.72g inclusive of suspension ring, engraved verso "Benburb F.C., Won by J. Shaw, 1931-32".
Born in Annathill, North Lanarkshire on 29th November 1912, John Shaw began his football career with Govan-based Benburb F.C., winning the medal here offered. After a five-year spell with Airdrieonians, he transferred to Rangers, whom he would later captain. Retiring in 1953, Shaw, who'd earned the moniker "Tiger" through his tough playing style, also held the distinction of captaining the first Scottish club team to lift "the Treble" of League, League Cup and Scottish Cup. This was not the only first accomplished by Shaw over the course of his playing career. Representing Scotland against Switzerland in 1946, Shaw played alongside his brother Davie: the first time in the history of the national side that siblings had been on the field at the same time. It was not until 2005 that this would recur.
