top carved with initials MD and dated 1892 and framed by repeating thistle motifs over front panel carved with an armorial lion rampant flanked by thistles framed by saltires, crowns and acanthus leaves, sides further carved with thistles under crowns flanked by fleur de lis, 64cm high x 112cm wide x 49cm deep
James Downie raised by his grandfather in Kirkintilloch and later apprenticed as a carpenter would go on to serve at provost of Lenzie twice in his lifetime, Associated with Woodilea Asylum, this kist was made for Mary Somerville Downie who married his son James
