A FLINTLOCK BAYONET BLUNDERBUSS BY EDWARD OXBORROW OF WOODBRIDGE, SUFFOLK
With maker's name engraved to steel lock plate, the octagonal breech engraved "Woodbridge" along top-facing surface and with crossed sceptre proof marks, the steel spike bayonet top-mounted, with brass-tipped ramrod mounted below, the stock with chequered grip, the brass barrel measuring approx. 36cm in length; the whole approx. 75cm
Mechanism holds half and full-cock well. Trigger with a nice direct connection and sensitive release. Hammer strikes cleanly and forcefully. Jaw screw turns freely. Frizzen moves cleanly between positions and is held firmly by its spring. Bayonet releases with force and reliably clips securely into position. Rear retainer holds it firm and slides smoothly. Ramrod is in good condition and removed easily from its housing.
Bayonet and mechanism are heavily tarnished, with patches of surface rust. Brass barrel also tarnished. Stock appears to have been refinished rather crudely with varnish, which has strayed onto both the trigger guard and barrel in a number of places. Losses to wood along length of barrel. Cracks and deep scratches in evidence elsewhere (difficult to determine severity under the thick varnish). Brass butt-plate with dents and general wear.
