BIBLE, HEBREW AND LATIN: HEBRAICA BIBLIA
Sebastian Münster (trans.), Basilae (Basel), Michael Isingrinus & Henricus Petri, 1546, two folio volumes, leatherbound, the text arranged in bilingual columns throughout, with extensive marginalia (2)
Note: the ownership inscription "John Dobie's Book..." may possibly relate to a forebear of John Dobie, Scottish linguist (1859-1894). Dobie was a noted Hebrew scholar and was Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University of Edinburgh. Dobie died young, the only fatality in a railway accident occurring near Newtonmore, Highland. He is memorialised with a stained glass window at Ladykirk Parish Church.
Volume I - Binding in rough shape, with covers detached and old Sellotape remnants affixed. Covers heavily worn, with losses to the leather. Tears to free endpaper and title page, with losses. Marks, annotations and creasing to title, with two small pieces of paper affixed (possibly concealing old annotations). Text is extensively annotated throughout, almost to every page. On the whole, pages are in fairly good condition, though with marks (occasionally dark) throughout. Some significant water staining. An old patched-in repair to page prior to index. Occasional tears and losses to page edges. Pages 289-300 lacking, with closely hand-written replacements. Worm effecting corners from page 536 to conclusion. Final pages very badly damaged as a result of lower cover coming loose.
Volume II - Binding intact, though much weakened. Much wear to the leather with losses. Title page is patched from remnants. Again, annotated in a period script throughout. Marks and spots of water damage throughout. Page 755 with significant damage and discolouration to edges. Holes to page 1132, Worm effecting page 1313 to conclusion. Page 1553 with an old patched repair to edge. Final page with significant damage and discolouration. Occasional dog-earing and creasing to pages.
