A 19TH CENTURY PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
Executed by Janet Morris, Aged 10 Years, featuring a depiction of a country house beneath Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden, a lion to foreground, framed under glass and measuring approx. 49cm x 43cm externally
Canvas is fairly bright and consistent in its colour. Numerous holes, many of which have been darned in a neutral coloured thread in an attempt to prevent further deterioration. The most significant damage is to the area between the head of the lion and the naming - "Janet Morris" etc. Other significant holes (approx. 1cm square) below top border, between serpent and tree trunk, to top righthand corner surrounding the vase of flowers and the bottom lefthand corner near to border. Many smaller holes elsewhere, with a heavily worn area approx. 1cm x 2cm above the gates to the house. Loose threads to rear are visible through the light canvas. Frame with historic label for Davidson, Kay & Co., Fine Art Dealers, Glasgow verso. Evidently has been within frame for some considerable number of decades.
