TWO VICTORIAN 1842 PATTERN PERCUSSION MUSKETS
Each with lock-plate engraved "Tower 1844" under crowned VR cipher, the stocks also dated 1844 with Board of Ordnance Broad Arrow stamp, the brass butt-plates engraved respectively "C 8722" and "C 71431"(?), the barrels measuring approx. 67.5cm in length, each being fitted with a socket bayonet with triangular tapering steel blade, housed in a brass-mounted leather scabbard (2)
Action on both muskets is poor. One will not hold half or full-cock, though the spring is strong. The other will hold half and full-cock but is very stiff and with a weak and sluggish action, failing to properly strike the cap.
Otherwise, both muskets are heavily worn. Barrels, mechanisms, ramrods, suspension loops etc. all with surface rust. One barrel is rusted rather more severely, leaving the surface rough and pitted in a number of areas. Stocks are battered, with deep divots and scratches generally. One with a spliced-in repair near to muzzle. Leather bayonet scabbards with much deterioration/drying to surface.
