A WW2 JAPANESE NAVAL OFFICER'S KAI GUNTO SWORD
The tang stamped "20", with anchor device closer to habaki, the grip wrapped in black shagreen, lacking ito and mekugi, with tsuba also absent, the saya with black ray skin covering, gilt floral cast mounts throughout; the blade measuring approx. 67cm in length, the whole approx. 96cm (sheathed)
Sword lacks many elements, as shown in photos. Lacking mekugi, the grip slides loose upon the tang. Blade is finger-marked and grubby along its length but is otherwise in good general condition. Habaki is covered with an oily residue, presumably applied to ease to sword's removal from its scabbard. The one present seppa with light surface rust (this is stamped "20", corresponding to the number stamped on the tang). Shagreen grip is split down its seam and separating from the wood beneath. Fuchi is also loose (stamped "20" internally). All cast metal components are tarnished/patinated. Ray skin scabbard cladding with general wear/scuffs. One suspension loop (obi tori) appears to have been reaffixed higher than was originally the case, exposing a screw hole.
