JOHN THOMSON OF CELTIC F.C. - A RARE MEMORIAL CARD
Printed on thick black-edged card, measuring approx. 15cm x 9cm
Goalkeeper John Thomson (born 28th January 1909) died on 5th September 1931 as a result of a catastrophic head injury sustained in a collision with Rangers' Sam English during the Old Firm match at Ibrox Park earlier that day.
The memorial card here offered was produced by Celtic manager William Maley in tribute to the talented keeper, featuring an oval portrait of Thomson with facsimile signature, verse by T. Smith of Darvel and a list of caps and medals received over his tragically curtailed career.
Elsewhere, Maley wrote of him,
A most likeable lad, modest and unassuming, he was popular wherever he went.
His merit as a goalkeeper shone superbly in his play. Never was there a keeper who caught and held the fastest shots with such grace and ease. In all he did there was the balance and beauty of movement wonderful to watch. Among the great Celts who have passed over, he has an honoured place.
