Bruce is depicted holding court at the Great Convention of Estates at Arbroath, 1320. This bronze relates to the stone statue of 1879 in the High St, Lochmaben, thought by some to be Bruce's birthplace.
Hutchison was born in Edinburgh, where he attended the Trustees Academy under Robert Scott Lauder. His portrait was painted by friends GP Chalmers and WQ Orchardson. After study in Rome, he exhibited at the RSA from 1856-1902 and the RA from 1862. Hutchison's subjects included Lauder, John Phillip and Sir George Harvey. He also completed sculptures for the Scott Monument in Edinburgh, with others residing in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Princes Street Gardens, Playfair Library, Windsor Castle and Westminster Abbey. His likenesses ranged from Queen Victoria to John Knox, Don Quixote, James Young Simpson, Henry Irving and Sir Walter Scott.
The bronze presents in good condition overall, as consistent with its age. On closer inspection there are some minor scuffs, scores and abrasions eg to drapery rear lower right, drapery hem front left, plinth corners. Otherwise minor scattered chips and scores, as one would expect eg blade rear. Some minor rubbing to patina on more protruding folds to rear. Small patch of green oxidisation to fold above plinth front. The bronze may benefit from a surface clean.
