A MODEL OF THE SHIP THERMOPYLAE
Thermopylae was a composite-hulled extreme clipper, built in 1868 by Walter Hood & Co. of Aberdeen for the Aberdeen Line. Designed for the Chinese Tea Trade, she was of exceptionally clean lines and set a speed record of sixty-three days between Gravesend and Hobsons Bay, Melbourne. Measures approx. 115cm from tip of bowsprit to stern and 82cm high at top of main-mast.
A comparable model is held in Aberdeen Maritime Museum
Ship is very dusty overall and requires a thorough clean. Many base blocks are loose and so the ship is unstable on its plinth. Fairly extensive damage to the rigging, with many crossbeams detached from the masts and hanging loose. Bowsprit has similarly been damaged and is currently attached precariously by a single small nail. Rudder is snapped off. Cracking and wear to paintwork generally. Wheel damaged with losses. Multiple other small areas of damage.
Hull is constructed from wood and judging by weight, would seem to be solid.
