H.M.S CENTURION: A LOG BOOK KEPT BY MIDSHIPMAN St. ANDREW OLIVER St. JOHN, 1900-01
During which time the ship supported Allied action during the Boxer Rebellion, the log being thoroughly kept and illustrated with copious hand-drawn maps and engineering diagrams, the volume being crudely covered with a reversed linen-backed map; together with a page of The Army and Navy Illustrated featuring a half-page annotated photograph of "The Officers of the Centurion", with Midshipman St. John shown front row, second from left; and a brass pocket sextant by T. Cook, London, believed to have belonged to him (3)

Born in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire.
Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1902.
Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1911.
Appointed in command of the monitor M.23 on 1st June 1916.
Awarded the D.S.O. for "distinguished and gallant services in command of M23 in Russia", gazetted 12 December, 1919.
Placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 September, 1920 and promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 18 March, 1922.
