AUTUMN FINE SALE HIGHLIGHTS

Our Autumn Fine Sale produced a plethora of stellar results across all departments. Famous Scottish names both past and present continued to attract dedicated bidding in our Paintings department.
Effervescent scenes such as Robert Gemmell Hutchison’s The Joys of Summer achieved £10,304*, while E.A Hornel’s Picking Blossom sold for £7,084*. A trio of playful scenes by the renowned Dorothea Sharp (Lot 894, £10,304*, Lot 957, £10,948*) saw strong international interest, with Lot 928, Feeding Time, achieving £33,488*.

Striking works by Jim Lambie (£3,348*) and Joe Hargan (Lot 897, £3,220*) shot past their estimates, yet the top lot of the department was claimed by Keith Vaughan: Landscape with Whistling Boy – Yorkshire 1945, a classic example from the autodidactic artist’s oeuvre, achieved £37,352* after an intense 10-minute battle between 9 phone bidders.

A pair of aesthetic movement Minton & Co vases by Christopher Dresser (Lot 152) were the star lot in our Decorative Arts department. In near perfect condition and after a tense battle between multiple phone bidders, the pair sold for £4,636*. Another vase by Zsolnay Pecs, diminutive but masterfully crafted, achieved £3,220*. Other works from famous designers were much sought after: A whimsical bonbon box by Gio Ponti for Richard Ginori (Lot 197) sold for £4,508*, while a commemorative mug by Eric Ravilious for Wedgwood brought £1,030*.

Lot 152: Two Minton & Co Vases, by Christopher Dresser & Co

Dedicated bidding continued over in our Asian & Ethnic Arts department. A fine selection of woodblock prints from artists such as Hiroshige and Hokusai (lot 356) achieved £1,416*, while an intricate gilt metal presentation vase (lot 370) realised £2,060*. An archaic censer (lot 313A) sparked a frenzy of bidding, selling for £4,508*, yet it was the multiple high quality porcelain items that attracted international attention. A fine example of a flambe glazed vase (lot 311A) realised £1,932*, a fabulous Famille Rose tile table screen (310A) achieved £2,576*, while a striking blue and white brush washer (lot 303) soared to £5,152*.

Classic diamonds and coloured stones commanded premium prices in our Jewellery department.

Stunning diamond bracelets combined with emeralds, rubies and sapphires (lot 675 and 685) achieved £1,223* and £1,288* respectively, while a diamond set Van Cleef & Arpels butterfly necklet (lot 654) flew to £2,318*. High quality solitaires and three stone diamond rings were the most prized lots of the department: lot 703 achieved £4,894*.
