A SET OF TWELVE REGENCY EBONISED BERGERE DINING CHAIRS FORMERLY OWNED BY LAURA PULTENEY, 1ST COUNTESS OF BATH, 1766-1808
consisting four carvers and eight hand chairs with simplistic backrests decorated with gilt lions and stylistic feathers over bergere seats (carvers with reeded scrolled arms) on sabre legs, 85cm high x 52cm wide x 62cm deep (12)
Provenance: originally owned by Laura Pulteney, 1st Countess of Bath 1766-1808. The chairs were brought to the grounds at Bonskeid where she and her husband Sir James Pulteney had obtained a 25-year lease with permission to build a house from the vendor's ancestor, Dr Stewart, with clause that after 25 years or the death of she and her husband, the land, house and contents would revert to the landowner (Dr Stewart). Lady Bath died shortly after the house's construction, followed by her husband three years later, in 1811, after which the chairs have remained in the vendors family.
