MEMENTO MORI WITH A SCOTTISH THEME
the carnelian is intaglio carved with skull and crossed bones, and the Honours of Scotland with the motto;- 'Homo Memento Mori'. Dimensions 25mm x 9mm x 4.2mm. Together with a purple glass seal, moulded with two donkeys, bearing the motto 'When shall we three meet again' dimensions 15mm x 13mm x 9mm.
These are not modern reproductions, in my opinion the Memento Mori is the oldest, possibly Georgian or older, it is hand carved into carnelian, It might have been previously set into a ring or a seal as there are worn and aged chips to the edge. The Skull and crossed bones etc have remnants of wax and dirt in the design. The Donkey example is Victorian mould cast glass and has minor scratches to both faces indicative of 'being around a bit..' also with wax to indents, and a few worn chips to the edges too.
