A WW1 GORDON HIGHLANDERS UNIFORM AND ARCHIVE OF PERSONAL EFFECTS BELONGING TO 292299 LANCE CORPORAL ANDREW G. CATTO
Comprising 1902 pattern cutaway doublet tunic with sergeant's chevrons, Lewis Gunner's patch and two wound stripes; kilt, marked in ink to lining "L. Cpl. A.G. Catto, Gordon H[...]", Tam o' Shanter, puttees, webbing gaiters, tartan hose and flashes, canvas covers etc.; British War and Victory medals (5816 Pte. A.G. Catto, Gordons), retaining original issue packet and together with a further British War Medal awarded to 278538 Pte. M. Nicholson Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders; dog tags, cap badges, field dressings, mirror and other personal effects; a Mekometer handbook with hand-drawn diagrams in Catto's hand inserted loose; a portrait photograph of Catto by J. Conway of Glasgow Road, Clydebank; notebook; Active Service Bible; etc.

Andrew G. Catto (b. 1897) was first enlisted into the Gordon Highlanders with the regimental number 5816 (corresponding to an enlistment date circa-December 1915/early-January 1916). Catto was posted to the 1st/7th (Deeside Highland) Territorial Force Battalion, Gordons prior to the Battles of the Somme (July to November 1916).

Tunic in fairly good overall condition, though with numerous small moth holes and cocoon remnants. Seams torn at right armpit and at collar. Buttons are dented, tarnished and worn. One hook missing from collar fastening; other hardware is lightly rusted. Wound stripes to cuff are tarnished and somewhat bent. Kilt is very good considering age and use. Again, some moth holes and remnants of cocoons. Leather straps dry and worn, the top strap apparently having been repaired. Light discolouration and minor tears to linen lining. Name inscribed in ink. Significant moth damage to Tam o' Shanter. Some holes and fraying to tartan hose. Some evidence of moth to hose and puttees. Webbing gaiters much dirtied and worn, commensurate with service. Paper articles with marking and wear throughout. General wear/tarnish to all badges and medals. Shaving mirror and other small metal articles with patches of surface rust and generally tarnished. Pocket book affected by white mould/mildew.
