A RARE PAIR OF VICTORIAN SCOTTISH FIRECLAY GARDEN VASES
Possibly by George Mossman and Alexander 'Greek' Thomson for Garnkirk Pottery, circa 1851,
with scrolled lugs and Classical coronation scenes, 92cm high x 46cm diameter (2)
Provenance: Gifted to our clients great grandfather who was the chauffeur to Mr Dixon of Govan Ironworks known as Dixon Blazes in the 1920s.
These are one of two vases exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
...an Egyptian nuptial vase - there are figures in basso relievo to represent the various stages of the ceremony. The figures are drawn by Mr George Mossman, the ornaments designed by Mr Steele, and the vase itself by Mr Thomson,of Messrs Baird and Thomson;Express (London),5 April 1851.
They were originally made by Ferguson,Miller & Co,but in 1862 the company's moulds were taken over by the Garnkirk Fireclay Company, which continued to produce them (thus they tend to be called 'Garnkirk Urns')
Our thanks to The Alexander Thomson Society for supplying this information.
The urns have lived outside and have previously been painted in what looks like white gloss. They have moss and lichen on them. Both have assorted old chips. One has cracks at the top which may be from firing. They have no bottoms so are hollow.
